The government has taken a major step to protect people from the increasing incidence of fraud and scams. Recently, the Department of Telecommunications directed telecom companies to implement the Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) feature in any one circle within a week. Immediately after receiving the directive from TRAI and the Department of Telecommunications, Vi complied with the order and made this feature live in Haryana.
According to a report in the Economic Times, sources within the Department of Telecommunications stated that Vodafone Idea has launched the CNAP pilot project in Haryana. This means that users in Vodafone Idea's Haryana circle will now see the caller's name when they receive a call. This move will completely transform the incoming phone call experience. Telecom regulator TRAI has agreed with the Department of Telecommunications that the caller's original name will be displayed by default, based on the caller's KYC.
When will this feature be rolled out nationwide?
Sources said that telecom companies have begun pilot projects in one circle, and the Department of Telecommunications will push for its full implementation across India as soon as possible. The Department of Telecommunications hopes to have this feature implemented across India by March 31, 2026.
What will be its benefits?
Help prevent spam and cyber fraud
 Consumers will experience better service
TRAI made this recommendation to DOT in 2024
Recall that in February 2024, TRAI recommended to DOT (Department of Telecommunications) regarding the Calling Name Presentation Service, stating that this service should be enabled only if the caller requests it. In a letter to TRAI, the Ministry stated that this service should be available by default. TRAI agreed with the Ministry's view, and now both departments are in agreement.
