The use of each of these depends on what you are doing to your . A lawn could require levelling, overseeding and patch repair work. These jobs are different, and therefore knowing how and when to use lawn dressing, topsoil, and compost is important to achieve the best outcome.
Compost can be used to repair small thin and bare patches in the lawn. A handful of lawn seed sown into small thin and bare patches can be quilted with a 1cm layer of peat-free multipurpose compost. This will snuggle the lawn seed between the ground and the quilt, resulting in a quicker germination time.
Topsoil is best used to level out and flatten a lawn. The first job is to cut the lawn on a low-cut setting so you can see the lumps and bumps.
The topsoil can be poured into bumpy areas and then spread with a rake and levelled with a plank of wood along the ground. The topsoil should be level with the existing soil.
Once the levelling has been done, seeding onto the topsoil can take place, which can then be quilted with lawn dressing.
Lawn dressing is created from composted organic material. It is very fine, making it ideal for quilting large patches of lawn seed.
The lawn dressing will assist in the germination process, protect the seed from hungry birds, and prevent the seed from being moved by wind and water. When sowing lawn seed, ensure that it is watered regularly.
