NEW DELHI: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati 's nephew Akash Anand has been made its chief national coordinator, the party announced on Sunday.
"The national president (Mayawati) has appointed Mr. Akash Anand as the party's chief national coordinator. He has been informed about the future programmes of the party. It is expected that he would now work in the interests of the party and the movement and work carefully to make significant contribution towards strengthening the party," the BSP said in a statement following an all-India meeting of party leaders in Delhi.
The development comes over a month after Mayawati re-inducted Anand in the BSP. In March, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister expelled her nephew from the party on the grounds that he was under the "continuous influence" of his father-in-law Ashok Siddharth.
On April 13, Mayawati decided to give "one more chance" to Anand. This came hours after he made a series of social media posts seeking "forgiveness" for all his "mistakes" and requested a chance to work for the party again.
"In light of Shri Akash Anand's four public posts today — in which he acknowledged his mistakes, expressed full respect for senior leaders, and pledged not to be influenced by his father-in-law in the future while dedicating his life to the BSP and its movement — the decision has been taken to give him one more chance," the senior politician posted on X that day.
"As for me, I am in good health, and as long as I remain fully healthy, I will continue to work with complete dedication and sincerity for the party and the movement, just like the respected (BSP founder) Kanshi Ram ji. Therefore, the question of naming a successor does not arise at all. I stand firm on this decision and will continue to do so," she added.
She also claimed Akash had been "reaching out" to people and seeking forgiveness following his expulsion.
