Haley Stevens (D-Mich.) on Thursday said she will draft articles of impeachment against Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F Kennedy Junior, accusing him of violating his oath of office and being “unfit to serve.”
“RFK Jr is making our country less safe and making healthcare less affordable and accessible for Michiganders,” Stevens said in a statement. “His contempt for science, the constant spreading of conspiracy theories, and his complete disregard for the thousands of research hours spent by America’s top doctors and experts is unprecedented, reckless, and dangerous.”
The Michigan Democrat said the articles will focus on several areas, including Kennedy’s funding cuts for medical research, which she called an “abdication of duty,” and his “failure to carry out statutory duties of HHS in administering the FDA and CDC.” Stevens also criticised his decision to remove every member of the CDC’s vaccine advisory panel and accused him of politicising the Food and Drug Administration.
The impeachment effort will also cite Kennedy’s vaccine policies . Stevens said they are “severely restricting access to vaccines and spreading absurd conspiracies, putting lives in danger, and raising healthcare costs.” She pointed to his withdrawal of federal recommendations for COVID-19 shots for pregnant women and healthy children, as well as the cancellation of mRNA vaccine research.
Stevens further accused Kennedy of making “wild and unfounded claims” at the White House by linking acetaminophen to autism “in an effort to limit access to Tylenol.” She added that he “lied in his confirmation hearing” when he pledged to Senate HELP Committee Chairman Bill Cassidy (R-La.) that he would leave the CDC’s vaccine advisory panel in place “without changes.”
“Secretary Kennedy has violated his oath of office and proven himself unfit to serve the American people,” Stevens said. “Congress must act to hold him accountable, and I intend to lead the charge to remove him from office.”
